MANAGING ENGINEER – TRANSPORTATION Austin, Texas The Austin Transportation Department is seeking to fill the Managing Engineer position, with a highly qualified engineer with expertise in traffic and transportation engineering for the Arterial Management Division. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the city’s signal timing program, signal construction and maintenance projects, and the intelligent transportation systems and networks. The position will supervise forty-nine employees and manage an operating budget of 7.5 million increasing to 9.2 million in October2017.. The ideal candidate will be immediately responsible for signal re-timing of at least one third of the signals per year; preventative maintenance of at least one fourth of the signals and one third of the school zones yearly. The Managing Engineer will be tasked with the oversight of the operating budget, CIP planning, the rollout of the adaptive signal control pilot for corridors, the expansion of the communication network expansion and reliability contract, and will deploy the traveler information web page. The Managing Engineer will bring expertise in the development of efficient traffic management systems and will bring new and innovative ways to tackle Austin’s complex transportation issues. Austin is one of fastest growing cities in the nation is considered one of the best places to live in the country. Austin attracts more than 157 new residents daily bringing 70 new cars daily to our roadways. The Managing Engineer will assist the Assistant Director in representing the City of Austin in activities with other regional transportation partners, in coordinating transportation activities with other regional transportation state and local planning agencies to include the Texas Department of Transportation, Capital Area Planning Council (CAMPO), Project Connect, Capital Metro, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, Lone Star Rail District and Movability Austin, as well as, present before council, commissions and lead meetings with the general public. Position requires graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Engineering, or in a field related to the job, eight (8) years’ experience in engineering, six (6) years of work experience must be acquired after licensing as a professional engineer and four (4) years of which were in a supervisory capacity; a Master’s Degree will substitute for up to one (1) year of work experience; a PhD degree will substitute for up to two (2) years of work experience A State of Texas Professional Engineer License is required; for out of state, Texas PE license must be acquired within six months of hire. Strong and positive team-building and leadership skills and the ability to facilitate collaborations with other regional transportation partners are critical.
