Bridge Load Rating Engineer - BE4 In-training
The Opportunity: WSDOT is looking for motivated and hardworking individuals to join our team supporting the Bridge Preservation Office. We are seeking to fill a Bridge Engineer 4 In-training position that will conduct load-rating duties across the region.


This project position will conduct bridge load ratings and review the load ratings completed by consultant contractors. The individual in this position will also evaluate bridges with low load ratings to determine if there is a need for load posting or other traffic restrictions, or for structural modifications to increase live load capacity.
Please Note: This is a project position expected to last 5 to 8 years.

Note: This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Bridge Engineer 1 - Bridge Engineer 4 level depending on experience and qualifications. Indicate in the supplemental questions, the level you are applying to. Candidates can apply to only one Bridge Engineer level. The salary levels and minimum qualifications for each are:


Bridge Engineer 1 - $46,596.00 - $61,212.00 annually •Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited school with emphasis on structures and preferably has an EIT license. (students graduating by the end of 2017 are also encouraged to apply) •Familiar with Microsoft suite applications.


Bridge Engineer 2 - $51,504.00 - $67,584.00 annually
•Bridge Engineer 1 qualification and must possess EIT license.
•18 months of experience in the design of structures, preferably bridges.


Bridge Engineer 3 - $56,844.00 - $74,604.00 annually •Bridge Engineer 2 qualifications plus 18 months of experience designing bridges.


Bridge Engineer 4 - $62,748.00 - $82,344.00 annually
•Bridge Engineer 3 qualifications and must have a Professional Engineer license.
•Minimum 3 years of experience designing bridges of various complexity and construction material and must have experience in structural analysis software.


This position will perform the following work: •Perform load rating analyses (similar to design check) on bridges.
•Evaluate bridges with low load ratings to determine if there is a need for load posting or other traffic restrictions, or structural modifications to increase live load capacity.
•Use structural analysis techniques, supplemented by field inspections where needed, to determine proper mitigation.
•Develop conceptual and final design of bridge modifications needed to restore or increase live load capacity.
•Modify load ratings as needed to reflect structural changes due to vehicle damage, widening's, constructed modifications and retrofits.
•Review consultant submittals and provide comments to Senior Load Rating Engineer.
•Receive and approve or reject applications for overload movement over State bridges to insure safe passage of trucks without compromising the structural integrity of the bridges. Recommend alternate routing where necessary.


An ideal candidate for this position will have:
•Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering (students graduating by the end of 2017 are also encouraged to apply)
•One year experience as a Bridge Engineer 3
•Registration as a professional engineer in Washington State in the discipline of Civil or Structural.
•Valid driver's license
