Structural Design Engineer – Professional Engineer 1
Highway Division – Technical Services

We are recruiting for a structural design engineer to join our team in Roseburg. This position plans and directs the design of simple to complex bridges and other transportation-related structures to solve engineering problems. The structural design engineer provides structural analysis, design services, and technical guidance within ODOT. This person will also mentor and train other professional designers and technicians in structural analysis and design.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform bridge and structures engineering of simple to complex bridges and other transportation-related structures.
  • Perform modeling for structural analysis.
  • Perform design and detailing for simple to complex bridges and structures.
  • Prepare estimate of probable construction cost for simple to complex bridges and structures.
  • Coordinate with the project specification writer to prepare construction specifications.
  • Participate on project teams.
  • Develop innovative project solutions.
  • Complete preliminary design and final design phases.
  • Direct and review the work of structural designers and drafters in the preparation of plans and detailing structures.
  • Perform a complete engineering analysis and load rating of new bridges.
  • Complete design and structure cost data and calculation books.
  • Act as bridge quality reviewer and perform quality practices.
  • Provide consultation for planning, scoping, technical design, and construction issues.
  • Assist and provide technical leadership to designers regarding structural engineering design and detailing.
  • Provide project scoping consultation to project leaders.
  • Assist in writing design contract language and managing design contracts.
  • Review and critique the work of professional consultants for conformity to design principles and structural adequacy.

Minimum Qualifications:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering.
Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.
Special Qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

You are not required to have all of these attributes, but please make sure that the ones you do have are clearly demonstrated in your application materials. Your application materials may be graded on spelling, grammar, punctuation, and presentation.

  • Experience designing using reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and structural steel.
  • Experience designing simple to complex bridges.
  • Experience load rating simple to complex bridges.
  • Experience designing repair and strengthening existing bridges.
  • Experience in seismic design.
  • Experience mentoring others.

Working Conditions:

  • Typical office environment the majority of the time with occasional work in the field.
  • Field work may require walking adjacent to fast moving traffic, stooping, bending or climbing around hazardous locations, working 20 feet or move above ground, traffic, railways, or water, and using safety equipment.
  • Occasional day or night work required outside of normal work schedule.
