The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is currently hiring a Senior Communications Editor, a position located in Washington, DC.
Nature of Position:
The incumbent is primarily responsible for producing the weekly AASHTO Journal and as such maintains regular contact with Congressional committee staff, federal agencies, state DOTs and other transportation organizations. The incumbent may attend and report on news conferences, Congressional hearings, and other news events.
Other responsibilities include a wide range of communications functions including research, speech writing, PowerPoint presentations, press releases or statements, video scripts, content for the AASHTO web site, and other communications activities and duties as required.
The incumbent may serve as the AASHTO communications liaison to certain interdisciplinary committees as assigned, both internal to the association and with other transportation organizations.
General duties encompass research, writing, and assistance as required to the Communications Director, and other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of six years of diverse communications experience. Understanding of the federal legislative process and transportation issues is preferable. A bachelor’s degree in communications and journalism, or related field, is required.
Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills, as well as editorial proofreading skills are critical to this position. The incumbent must be detail oriented and be capable of self-direction and follow-through on tasks in a timely manner, as well as have the ability to prioritize tasking. This position requires an incumbent who can meet demanding deadlines and the ability to work independently and creatively.
