Join the ODOT team as a heavy equipment technician 1, fabrication technician for the Maintenance and Operations Branch. This opportunity offers the chance to overhaul engines, transmissions and more! You will work both independently and with a team of fellow technicians to keep ODOT's equipment in excellent working condition and on the road.

  • Repair ODOT and highway maintenance equipment performing welding, cutting, fabricating, and equipment modifications using a variety of techniques, tools and equipment.
  • Fabricate and modify component parts using drawings, sketches, verbal direction or written descriptions of intended functions.
  • Perform diagnostic testing on equipment, troubleshoots the root cause, develops solutions and carries out the necessary repairs.
  • Complete post repair inspections to ensure the proper function of equipment prior to returning it to service.
  • Keep tools, equipment and work areas safe, clean, and hazard-free and uses proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to carry out tasks.
  • Ensure proper repair using the correct parts, within appropriate time frames and in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Record and track time and materials and enters in work order information into the Fleet Information Management System (FIMS).
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, peers, supervisors, other agencies, vendors and the public.
  • Manage time effectively to maximize productivity and customer service.
Working Conditions
  • Works in an ethical, professional, and cost-effective manner and promotes a positive image of ODOT to internal and external customers and the general public at all times.
  • Hard physical labor during all types of conditions such as; standing, bending, stooping, and climbing on, over under and around all types of equipment and during adverse weather conditions, day or night.
  • Frequently lifting up to 50 pounds or more is required and with assistance lifting 100 pounds or more on a periodic basis. 
  • Exposed to dust, welding and cutting fumes, exhaust fumes, petroleum products, de-icer chemicals, herbicides and high noise levels.
  • Overnight travel and overtime may be required for this position.
  • Works in an ethical, professional, and cost-effective manner and promotes a positive image of ODOT to internal and external customers and the general public at all times.
  • This position may require the acquisition and maintenance of licenses and certifications in such areas as propane fitting, refrigerant recycling, confined space entry and respirator use.
  • This position holder is required to have and have the ability to maintain a welding certification as a condition of employment.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Four (4) years of experience as a journeyman Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
Special Qualifications
  • The position holder is required to have and have the ability to maintain a Class A, Commercial Driver License and a Public Utility Commission (PUC) Medical Examiner's Certificate and the ability to drive as a condition of employment.
