EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Under limited supervision of a professionally licensed engineer, the successful applicant will perform a variety of duties in support of highway construction projects. Serve as survey crew member or leader on preliminary and construction surveys. Inspect construction of earthwork, culverts, bridges, pavements, etc. Plan, coordinate and lead inspection and survey work on assigned construction projects. Coordinate engineering activities with contractors and/or utility companies. Participate in, or conduct various meetings, including plan-in-hand, public information, public hearing, pre-appraisal, and pre-construction. Perform work involved in the quality testing, selection, and investigation of materials involved in the construction of highway projects. Perform routine administrative work in the maintenance of records and reports. May work irregular hours, evenings and weekends. Expect occasional statewide overnight travel.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in engineering OR registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E. license).
PREFERRED: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Successful completion of FE/EIT examination.
OTHER: Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. If applicants do not have an FE/EIT certificate, they will be required to obtain one within one year of hire and applicants will be expected to pursue their professional engineer’s license at the first available opportunity. Must be available for occasional out of town travel and working extended hours to meet deadlines. Will be required to obtain and maintain various certifications such as soil and concrete testing. Must be able to safely move, load, and unload various materials and supplies with or without assistance. Regular and reliable attendance is required. May work irregular hours, evenings and weekends. Expect occasional statewide overnight travel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Possess a knowledge of engineering theories, principles and practices related to highway construction. A basic understanding of practices and terminology related to computer operation, computer-aided design, and drafting applications. Knowledge of mathematical concepts and formulae, general surveying, and materials testing practices. Skill in communication. Skill in mathematics and engineering problem solving related to heavy highway construction. Skill in the use of computer programs to communicate, record and analyze information related to work. Skill in organization and record keeping. Ability to read, interpret and apply plans and related specifications. Ability to act in a professional manner in work and public situations. Ability to effectively relate and work with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, landowners and interested public. Ability to develop necessary professional relationships in order to be effective. Ability to manage multiple tasks and information effectively and accurately with attention to detail. Ability to work outdoors in differing weather conditions typical of construction work-sites.
