The primary purpose of this position is to provide engineering support for programs and projects of a technical nature within the Bridge Section to assist in ensuring internal and external processes are met within state rules and regulations.

Bridge Engineering Section (BES) is responsible for providing statewide asset management for the State and Local Bridge Inventory and statewide leadership in the discipline of Bridge Engineering.  BES inspects State and Local Bridges to FHWA National Bridge Inventory System Standards and provides statewide technical leadership and expertise in load rating state and local bridges and the analysis of bridges for truck permits.  This section analyzes bridge conditions and provides trend forecasting for strategic prioritization and selection of capital improvement and maintenance projects to provide confidence in safety and preservation of the highway bridge infrastructure.  BES provides engineering services to Regional Technical Centers, related to the preservation of historic, coastal, movable and covered bridges.

  • The person in this position may spend several days at a time collecting vertical clearance data. Extensive travel may be required to work in other office locations as well as in the field. 
 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under close supervision of Senior Load Rating Engineer, perform the less complex load rating analysis using standard load analysis computer programs and compile reports.
  • Collect and verify vertical bridge clearance data for all State and Local Agency bridges in Oregon.
  • Research bridge engineering data to establish a priority list, and schedule and facilitate the coordination of priorities from Motor Carrier Transportation Division (MCTD).
  • Generate electronic data and reports to prepare diagrams for uploading into the MCTD automated permit system with appropriate review.
  • Work with the Bridge Inventory Coordinator to upload data into the Oregon Bridge Inventory.
  • Under the close supervision of the Bridge Program Unit Manager, produce reports used to analyze and determine the status of the collection, quality control and quality assurance of the data as well as the process for collection.
  • Assist the Senior Bridge Inspector with the administration of consultant contracts for the inspection of all of the major structures in the state's bridge inventory.
  •  Frequent use of computers and a variety of computer programs to include programs that support engineering related activities.  Extensive travel may be required to work in other office locations as well as in the field.  May be required to accompany bridge inspection staff on bridge inspections which may involve working on or around heights, around and above bodies of water, confined spaces, high traffic volumes and noise in all types of weather conditions.  May be required to lift up to 30lbs.  Must be able to independently establish work methods and priorities by managing conflicting priorities and coordinating how to meet deadlines mandated by managers, customers, and/or outside factors.  Overtime may be required to meet deadlines and handle peek workloads.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Fundamentals of Engineering certificate (FE)
AND 
One year of experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods.
AND
Must have and maintain a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.

Note: As there is a large portion of time spent on the processing of word documents, spreadsheets and database maintenance, overall computer and software skills are essential. Preference will be given to those applicants who are proficient with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Visio and Outlook Mail).
