Civil Engineering Specialist 1 - Geodetic Survey Associate (ODOT17-1221oc)

This position is responsible for supporting resource grade Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment and procedures for asset inventory as part of ODOT's Asset Management Program. This position also works with the Geometronics Geodetic Control Program. The Geodetic Control Program is responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of ODOT's vertical and horizontal control infrastructure across the State of Oregon. This control network forms the foundation for all surveys, private and/or public, in Oregon.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. Must be able to drive both day and night.
 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research new resource grade GPS technology and provide information to the Chief of Surveys for procurement.
  • Provide training to various ODOT staff in the use of Resource Grade GPS hardware and related software.
  • Work closely with various ODOT sections to develop standards and custom data collection applications relating to resource grade GPS and associated data storage, including, but not limited to GIS, Asset Inventory, Geo-Hydro/Environmental, and Access Management to assure resource grade GPS data is collected efficiently and accurately by end users.
  • Research the emerging technologies related to GPS Reference Station Networks and plan future enhancements to the Oregon GPS Reference Network.
  • Implement a plan for continued development of the Statewide Real-Time GPS Reference Station Network; coordinate closely with other public and private reference station partners.
  • The duties of this position may require extensive overnight statewide travel, which may be in adverse weather conditions. Must work in the field with survey crews to provide on-the-job training and assistance. Field work may be in remote areas, during inclement weather, and alone. Contact with the public, which may be hostile at times.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Surveying, or Transportation-related Engineering and one year civil engineering or surveying experience;
OR
An Associate's degree in Engineering Technology or Surveying from a recognized community college or technical school of engineering and two and one-half years of engineering or surveying experience. One year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group;
OR
Four years of para-professional engineering or surveying experience. One year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group;
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

NOTE: Preference will be given to applicants with a Land Surveyor Intern (LSI) or Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT).
