Lead Geotechnical Engineer

Of Transportation's State Highway Administration Office of Materials Technology (Hanover, MD) is recruiting for a Lead Geotechnical Engineer (Transportation Engineering Manager I) position. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications* listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. All eligible candidates must meet the minimum and selective qualifications by the closing date. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill the vacancy, and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification in the Office of Materials Technology (Hanover, MD). This position is responsible for the leadership of an engineering team which provides advanced professional geotechnical engineering for highway design and construction. This position represents the division or section chief at meetings with SHA district personnel and other Maryland State agencies, and acts as project manager for Engineering Geology projects. The team leader is expected to provide specialized geotechnical engineering to support the SHA project delivery process and unique geotechnical needs of Districts by ensuring that project deadlines and goals are met and designs meet identified Division and SHA standards. This position is expected to work independently with guidance on specialized projects and will be responsible for the performance of the team as a whole. The team leader will be responsible for delivering specialized geotechnical services relating to Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls, steepened soil slopes, landslide studies, slope stabilization, retaining structures, settlement analyses, ground improvement, geotechnical instrumentation and construction support. This position will report directly to the Assistant Division Chief - Geotechnics and Specification Review of Engineering Geology Division and will be responsible for the leadership of a team of SHA full time engineers, consulting staff and engineering students. QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university. EXPERIENCE: Seven (7) years experience in professional engineering. SELECTIVE QUALIFICATION: Three and a half (3.5) years of experience in geotechnical engineering. *A selective qualification recruitment is conducted for positions when there is a specific or additional bona fide occupational qualification (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability). Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education. 2. Possession of a Master's Degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the non- supervisory experience. 3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ideal candidate should have the ability to manage field assignments which may include walking and climbing through areas that have steep slopes or other natural obstacles. A Master's degree or higher in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering specialty LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS: Must possess a driver's license valid in the state of Maryland. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Travel statewide and respond to geotechnical emergency requests, which may require working on weekends and nights. Overnight stays may be required.
