ODOT's Bridge Engineering Section is responsible for the design, design standards, load capacity evaluation, inspection and asset management for all state highway structures, tunnels, and other structural elements.
 
We are recruiting for a senior structural design engineer (regional bridge lead engineer) to join our Regional Bridge Design sub-unit in Portland. This position plans and directs the most complex, intricate design of major bridges and other highway and transportation related structures to solve unusual engineering problems. This person also provides structural analysis and design services to Project Delivery for state bridges and transportation structures. Additionally, this position heads up a group of bridge engineers on the most complex and challenging design projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice and perform pre-project assessments, evaluation, and estimates in the area of bridges and transportation related structures.
  • Provide advice and perform project scoping in the area of bridges and transportation related structures for capital improvement, maintenance, and local public agency projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise in all aspects of bridge design, including bridges and other transportation-related structures.
  • Serve as primary contact for maintenance business line regarding bridge and structure design services and bridge emergency response matters.
  • Serve as point of contact for bridge design resources for local public agency, planning, quality, bid letting, and engineering matters.
  • Perform quality practices as noted in the Bridge Design & Drafting Manual and Bridge Design Work Order.
  • Prepare bridge design work order internal to the operation of the Bridge Design Unit.
  • Independently perform bridge and structures engineering of simple to complex bridges and other transportation-related structures.
  • Independently perform modeling for structural analysis.
  • Independently perform design and detailing for simple to complex bridges and structures.
  • Independently prepare estimate of probable construction cost and schedule for simple to complex bridges and structures.
  • Coordinate with the project specification writer to prepare construction specifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
A valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering (NOTE: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.)
AND
Three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.

Special Qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).
 
Preferred Attributes: We may show preference to candidates whose application materials demonstrate the following.
  • Experience designing bridges and structures.
  • Experience using engineering/design codes.
  • Experience with computer programs or software used to perform civil and structural analysis.
  • Experience leading small groups.
  • Experience reviewing, writing, and managing contracts.
  • Demonstrated communication skills.
 
Working Conditions:
  • Typical office environment the majority of the time with occasional work in the field.
  • Field work may require walking adjacent to fast moving traffic, stooping, bending or climbing around hazardous locations, working 20 feet or move above ground, traffic, railways, or water, and using safety equipment.
